Home Remedies For Arthritis In Hand

Arthritis is derived from two words; a Greek word ‘Arthron’ and Latin word ‘itis’ meaning joints and inflammation respectively. Arthritis is the inflammation of joints which is the major cause of disability in people of old age. The common symptoms of the arthritis are pain and stiffness of joints. There are various types of arthritis including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, septic arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Various joints can be affected by arthritis including small bones of hands and wrist, which is the most common type of arthritis. Arthritis in hands can affect are daily life activities. It can cause the swelling of the affected area, pain, temperature rising of the affected area, shape changing of the joint, crepitation and cysts.
Arthritis in hand is the type of arthritis that occurs when there is the breakdown of cartilage. Controlling symptoms of arthritis is possible these days due to advancement of scientific research and availability of various medications. Some of these tips can be used to ease the pain and control the arthritis in hand.
  • Olive Oil – A special compound oleocanthal is present in olive oil that has a strong effect on inflammation caused by the arthritis. This compound has the ability of to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. Using olive oil in food can help reducing pain and inflammation. It can also be used to massage the fingers and the points of inflammation. For the best results a mixture of warm olive oil and lavender oil can be used to massage joints gently.
  • Potato- Potato is very famous for its
    medical usage as it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Due to these properties it can be used to treat arthritis. This can be done by consuming raw potato juice daily. A raw potato juice will help in the flexibility of joint and reduction of inflammation, cooked potato may lack anti-inflammatory power. Juice can be prepared by cutting the unpeeled potato and keeping it overnight in cold water. Next morning the water can be strained and consumed on empty stomach. The other way of preparing is to extract the juice of a medium sized potato and mixing it with water before consumption.
  • Garlic – is another important element that can be used against arthritis as it contains anti-inflammatory property. Along with some special properties it contains a substance allicin that can help in inhibiting the growth and reproduction of micro-organisms. This is important as these bacteria and micro-organism are the source of worsening of the arthritis symptoms. You can use garlic on daily routine basis in your food. You can either use it in cooking food or can shred raw garlic on the food. You can also take a massage; heat the garlic cloves in mustard oil and use the oil after it cools down to massage on the points of inflammation on your fingers to relieve pain.
  • Honey and cinnamon- in combination have excellent healing properties and therefore can be used to treat arthritis in hands. A combination of one tablespoon of honey and half teaspoon of cinnamon powder can be prepared; it is to be taken in empty stomach daily. Regular consumption of this mixture will help relaxing the stiff muscles. Honey has antiseptic properties while cinnamon is famous for antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Therefore they are important ingredients of the arthritis treatment diet.
  • Epsom salt-in scientific language is known as magnesium sulfate. Name tells that this salt is formally composed of magnesium. Magnesium is an important micronutrient. Magnesium richness of this salt helps in the improved oxygen consumption this preventing the formation of blood clots and the hardening of arteries. This can be used to reduce the stiffness, inflammation and pain in the joints that are the symptoms of arthritis.  To relieve your muscles from cramps and pain and to reduce inflammation dip your hands for 20 minutes in warm water mixed with Epsom salt. For better results also add some rock salt and fennel oil.
  • Castor oil – is being used for ages in medicine as it has analgesic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. All these properties are due to the presence of an important compound known as ricinoleic acid. Arthritis pain can be reduced by applying it to the area of inflammation and massaging it slowly. Castor oil can be consumed early in morning on empty stomach; warm it a bit and mix it with juice.
  • Hot water- Soak a towel in hot water and then squeeze the excess water use that towel and put it on your fingers and hands. This warmness will help in the improvement of the blood circulation, relaxes the muscle and reduces the stiffness. This process can be repeated several times a day. Use exercise in combination with warm compresses to see fast results.
  • Turmeric powder- also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and aseptic properties and it can be used in food to help treating arthritis.
